MATH

Course offerings and sequences in mathematics vary and should be selected based on students’ post-secondary plans. Although there is some flexibility, college-bound students in particular should carefully consider which sequence would best serve their intentions following graduation. Students are required to meet a minimum of 3 mathematics credits as a requirement for graduation.

The following course sequence is designed to provide the necessary mathematical knowledge and skills for students who plan military enlistment or direct entry to the workforce following graduation from Thornton Academy. Students enrolled in the following section of classes can expect most work to be completed during the academic period. However, some may have out of class assignments where students could be expected to spend about 20 minutes a night.

Pre-Algebra

1 Credit Prerequisite: 8th Grade Math or teacher recommendation
Pre-Algebra is the building blocks of Algebra 1. Students will practice the following foundational math skills: adding, subtracting, multiplication, division, and fractions( using both positive and negative integers). While learning foundations of math, students will be introduced to the concepts of variables, constants, solving one variable equations, and graphing those linear equations using slope-intercept.

Algebra 1 Foundations

1 Credit Prerequisite: Pre-Algebra or teacher recommendation
Foundations Algebra I is a supportive, introductory course designed to strengthen essential pre-algebra and algebra skills while presenting core Algebra I concepts at a pace that builds confidence and deepens understanding. Designed for students who plan to enter the workforce after high school, this class emphasizes practical mathematical reasoning. Students will work with linear equations and inequalities, functions, proportional
