Acceptable Academic Achievement in Support Courses in Nursing:
• A minimum grade of C + is required for all math and science courses( Fundamentals of Math, MTH 103; Anatomy and Physiology I and II, Lecture and Laboratory; BIO 107 / L and BIO 108 / L; Principles of Nutrition, NUT 200; Microbiology for the Health Sciences, BIO 121 / L; and Chemistry for the Allied Health Sciences, CHM111 / L).
• Students may not repeat a science or math course more than once.
• Students who earn a grade lower than C + in Anatomy and Physiology I BIO107 must repeat Anatomy and Physiology I, BIO 107, and earn the grade of“ C +” before progressing to Anatomy and Physiology II, BIO108.
• Students who withdraw from Chemistry 111 lecture need to withdraw from Chemistry 111 lab as well. However, students who withdraw from the Chemistry 111 lab portion of chemistry may remain in the lecture section of Chemistry 111.
• Grades of“ C +” or higher in both lecture and laboratory sciences, math, and nutrition courses must be earned before the student can advance to their junior level nursing courses.
Academic Standards, Progress, Probation and Program Dismissal: Grades of“ C +” or higher are required in all nursing courses. For advancement each semester, a 2.67 cumulative GPA is required. Any student below the GPA of 2.67 at the end of the semester may not continue with nursing courses in the next semester.
A student may achieve less than a“ C +” in only one nursing course. Students who earn lower than a C + in a nursing course may repeat the course once and cannot progress in the sequential nursing clinical courses until they successfully complete the repeated course with a grade of“ C +” or higher. Students may only withdraw from each course once. Students may be part-time while repeating a course. The student will be placed on nursing academic probation after earning one nursing course failure. If a student earns less than a“ C +” in any two nursing courses, they will be dismissed from the program. Experiential Learning: Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from off-campus experiential learning opportunities.
Non-Academic Criteria for Admission, Progression and Retention
Professional Nursing Law permits the PA State Board of Nursing to review an applicant’ s“ good moral character.” This includes reviewing criminal history, professional misconduct, and any past disciplinary actions, all of which may impact whether a license is granted.
