Prior to entry into the PY1 of the program, students are required to having an overall GPA ≥ 3.0, completed and documented 20 or more hours of occupational therapy observation, and attest to meeting the Technical Functions of Occupational Therapy Practice with or without reasonable accommodations( see below).

Probation Probationary status is assigned to a student whose semester grade point average has fallen below good standing status at the conclusion of an academic semester, and the period of probation goes into effect for the following academic semester. Please note that a student may have an overall program GPA ≥ 3.0 and still be placed on academic probation since academic probation is based on the semester grade point average for each semester in the program.

Students may only be placed on academic probation once during their preprofessional phase undergraduate program from freshman to junior years as per the Undergraduate Class Standing Classification by Credits seen in the Registration Information for Students and once during their professional phase / graduate program, the PY1 and PY2 years. PY2 is the professional year 2, a time when graduates from this BHS in Occupational Science program take one year of graduate courses to earn their Master of Science in Occupational Therapy.

Program Dismissal

Students who fall into the academic probation range a second time during either the preprofessional or professional / graduate phases will receive a program dismissal letter from the Program Director. Students who are dismissed from the program can elect to change their major and complete degree requirements of a different major offered by the university.

Students reserve the right to appeal a program dismissal if there were extenuating circumstances that effected the students’ academic performance during the semester that the dismissal was given. Students should notify the Program Director that an appeal is sought within 48 hours after receiving the program dismissal letter. The Program Director will then provide the student, the contact information for the Chair of the Appeals Committee for the Frances M. Maguire College of Nursing and Health Professions in order to formally submit an appeal. An appeal can only occur once for either a BHSOS( during the preprofessional phase of the program) or during the period of PY1 and PY2. If a BHSOS student filed an appeal as an undergraduate student during the pre-professional phase and are successful in that appeal, they do not qualify for another program dismissal appeal as a student during PY1 or PY2.
