Something for everyone at a local park

Natural lovers, athletes and children have many opportunities to spend time in green space throughout Richfield’ s park system.
When the city was envisioned as a place for families to thrive, planners placed a high priority on giving them ample space to relax and play. That foresight continues to pay off as the city boasts over 450 acres of park land, spread across 22 recreation sites within seven square miles.
At the center of Richfield’ s parks system is Veterans Memorial Park, which includes the municipal pool, ice arena, farmers market, Honoring All Veterans Memorial, mini-golf course and bandshell.
About a mile west of Veterans Park is Wood Lake Nature Center, another of the city’ s major recreation destinations. The 150-acre nature area includes paths for hiking and cross-country skiing, boardwalks around the lake, hammock stands, educational displays, a 100-seat amphitheater, event pavilion and an interpretive center.
Those looking to drop a line in the water can head to the east end of town, where Taft Lake provides piers and platforms for fishing, along with kayak and paddleboard rental.
During winter, the outdoor skating rinks that dot the city offer opportunities to carve up the ice, a nod to the city’ s longstanding love of hockey. The rinks are open in December, January and February, weather permitting.
Athletic fields and facilities are spread across the city parks, with spaces for tennis and pickleball, baseball, soccer, football, basketball and volleyball. A total of 10 miles of walking trails are also available throughout the city parks.
The many neighborhood parks offer easy access to open spaces for all residents. Recent park improvements include:
 • Richfield Skate Park, located at Augsburg Park
 • Richfield Off Road Bike Park, located at Taft Park
 • New playground equipment at Monroe and Fairwood Parks
Richfield also offers park shelter and building rental. More information about the city’ s parks and amenities is available online at richfieldmn. gov / parks or by calling the Community Center at 612-861-9385.
