Cricket more accessible to the community

Plymouth celebrated the opening of a historic new park earlier in the year, cutting the ribbon for the Meadows Playfield and a first-of-its-kind cricket pitch at 5805 Peony Lane N. The event brought in city officials and a large crowd of cricket fans, coaches and players to celebrate the milestone.
The city of Plymouth’ s 69th park, the 18-acre Meadows Playfield, will go down as a historic piece of the west metro’ s athletic history. Amongst a few reasons, the park’ s official cricket pitch is perhaps the biggest. The pitch is one of the few outdoor playing facilities in the entire metro that is designed as a cricket-specific space, with appropriate lines, distances and general design.
Other features at the park include three lighted pickleball courts, two lighted tennis courts, a dedicated sledding hill and a strider bike course. The park includes a hockey rink, as well as a four-season restroom building, plaza, picnic shelters, shade structure and parking.
Plymouth also installed a new suspended pavement system at the Meadows Playfield near the warming house / restroom building. The underground infrastructure supports healthy tree growth while more effectively managing storm-water runoff. Additionally, the park features tall native prairie plantings, as well as wetland restoration and pollinator seed restoration efforts.
Plymouth mayor Jeff Wosje noted the importance of the cricket pitch at the ribbon-cutting, which he said was a topic constituents had brought up to him for years.
The creation of this pitch has reflected a huge effort from a collaborative team of city staff and community members, creating a space near the border of Plymouth and Maple Grove they hope can help cricketers across the metro.
Cricket is quietly growing across Minnesota through the work of organizations like the Minnesota Cricket Association( MCA), as well as youth organizations like the MYCA and MVP Cricket Academy, both located in the metro.
