The Manila Lions are looking to claw their way back into the playoffs after finishing 2-8 a season ago. Coach Ben Fisher has a number of skill guys returning to provide some playmaking ability for his pride.“ We are a spread team,” Coach Fisher said.“ Our skill players will be our strength with our receivers and defensive backs all returning. Our area of concern will be the offensive and defensive lines.” Hudson Harrison returns as the leading receiver from last year, while Patrick Fisher will make the move from H-back to quarterback this year. Kaleb Birmingham and Clayton Hawkins return to the offensive line to protect Fisher and also open up holes for starting running back Brody Morris who had 720 rushing yards last season. Experience also returns on the defensive side of the field with Kallum McWhirter, Dawson Howard, and Dakota Miles joining Morris as three years starters on defense for the
Lions. Howard had 121 tackles last season, while Morris contributed 88 tackles and five interceptions.“ We will be an odd front defense,” Coach explained.“ Our strength will be our linebackers and area of concern will be the defensive line with a lack of size and numbers.” On special teams, Morris makes his presence felt as the punter and a returner where he took one to the house last year. Dylan Overman is an excellent deep snapper, but the Lions will be searching for a kicker as the season starts. Coach Fisher feels the playoffs are a good possibility if they can get certain things in line.“ If we can figure out our line play we look to compete for a playoff spot,” he said.“ The 3A-3 is one of the toughest conferences in the 3A. Week in and week out every game is a big game.” The 3A-3 is certainly one of the toughest in the state, but look for the Manila Lions to compete for the final playoff spot to get back to the post season.
