The winds of change have been swirling in Jonesboro, and this fall, the Golden Hurricane plans to make landfall. After back-to-back seasons defined by close calls and“ what-ifs,” Head Coach Tyler George enters his third year with the belief that the rebuilding is done— and it’ s time to win. Jonesboro finished 3-8 overall and 3-4 in the tough 6A East last year, but the talent on this roster suggests those numbers could flip in a hurry. The offense will once again be driven by a dynamic backfield pairing that few in the state can match. Junior quarterback Asa Myers, fresh off an All-Conference season, brings a big arm and poise to the pocket after throwing for 1,947 yards and 16 touchdowns a year ago. Lining up beside him is bruising All-State running back T. J. Brown, who punished defenses for 1,184 yards and 18 scores in 2024. Defensively, the“ Golden Gang” will be anchored by trench warrior Desmond Golden at defensive tackle, who had 48 stops last season, and lockdown defensive back Jaques Jordan, who brings playmaking ability on the back end— including a defensive touchdown last year. A key newcomer is transfer linebacker Noah Wendel( 6-1, 225), a versatile defender who will roam the middle and rush the edge in passing situations. Special teams are set with Alex Glomski and Cristian Moreno handling all the kicking duties, while wide receiver Kam Davis looks poised for a breakout after averaging over 12 yards a catch in limited action. The schedule closes with a brutal but potentially defining three-game gauntlet against Sylvan Hills, El Dorado, and archrival West Memphis— a stretch that could decide the Golden Hurricane’ s playoff fate. Coach George’ s 4-3 defensive scheme and power-spread attack are now fully installed, and with a hungry group of underclassmen mixing with proven stars, the pieces are in place. A Friday night storm at Cooksey-Johns Field is building.
The BIC Mustangs are set for another of season of golf. The boys and girls both return some fresh faces while mixing in some newbies. On the boy’ s side is lone senior Kell Gathright who will help lead the way. Gathright hits his driver well and scores well. Sophomore Jake Hurst is really good from 150 yards and in. Junior Cayden Davis hits it really well off the tee box. Another junior Braxton Littlefield can hit it a long way off the tee box. Sypher Sherrod, an additional junior, is a really good scramble golfer and can hit a lot of different types of shots. Finally, junior Weston Taylor is really good coming off of the tee box and consistently hits it straight. On the girl’ s side, junior Anistyn Bryeans hits it really well and understands the game of golf. She will be aided by a foursome of sophomores. Aubrey Clayton comes from a golf background and hits it a long way. Haddie Wells has a good swing and if she keeps on working, she could be really good. Marlee Pearson hits it really good off of the tee box. Avery Davis has a lot of potential and works at it to get better every day. Some new faces to the boy’ s side include: freshman Caleb Petznick who is really good around the greens and on the greens. He’ s a kid that works every day to get better. Junior transfer Cord Kirby is a really good golfer that simply has golf in his DNA.“ He hits hit a long way and is really good around the greens. I expect him to be the best in every match that we play,” explained head Coach Andrew McFarlin. Sophomore Nash Decker is a first year golfer but he’ s willing to learn and practice on his swing. New faces for the girls include sophomore Emma Kate Russel who is new to golf but is working at it to get better. Junior Scout Lyerly enters her first year to play golf and has the potential to be the best. She hits it’ s down the middle off the tee box and is working every day to get better around the greens.“ I expect the boys and girls to get better overall. I feel like we could have a chance in both groups to compete at districts and state if I get everybody’ s best. They are a young group, and they work at getting better every day. I feel like I have one of the best golfers on the boys side each match with a lot of other good golfers on the team with a lot of potential. On the girl’ s side, I feel like I have a good number of golfers. That goes a long way in girl’ s golf. They are young group, and they want to get better. If I can get them chipping and putting the ball better, I think they can post some really good scores.
