This bill would have established the Washington Local News Sustainability Program to provide grants to local journalists. AWB supports local journalism but opposed the bill because it proposed adding a potentially unconstitutional business and occupation tax surcharge on certain technology companies to fund the program. The bill had a hearing in the Senate Ways & Means Committee but failed to advance.
HB 1839 advanced computing surcharge
Failed / AWB Opposed sponsor: Rep. Julia Reed, D-Seattle
This bill would have removed the cap on the workforce education investment surcharge paid by advanced computing businesses. AWB supports funding to increase education and workforce opportunities but had questions about how the funds would be used and opposed the lack of a cap in the bill. AWB testified in opposition to the bill in its hearing before the House Finance Committee. The bill failed to advance.
SB 5785 higher education scholarships
Passed / AWB Opposed sponsor: Sen. June Robinson, D-Everett
This bill changes student eligibility for the Washington College Grant. It dramatically reduces grant awards for students to attend independent colleges, thereby limiting students’ access to college education and forcing them to make up the difference in other ways. The final bill passed the Senate 28-20 and the House 55-43, with several Democrats joining Republicans in voting against it.
