Deephaven: The reserved side of the lake
Deephaven is home to close to 3,700 residents, one of Lake Minnetonka’ s smaller but quieter towns, located around 20 miles west of Minneapolis. Established as a city in 1900, Deephaven has a lengthy history of being a settlement spot for Minnesotans. Minnetonka Boulevard serves as a central link for the city’ s activity, connecting it to the nearby larger cities of Excelsior and Minnetonka.
The city is home to 89 acres of parkland with seven parks and access to trails, such as the ever-growing Southwest Regional Trail, a developing 13-mile-long trail corridor spanning the area between Chaska and Victoria. Residents also have access to the city’ s six public beaches, with three of the beaches patrolled by lifeguards. Deephaven also hosts two marinas that accommodate approximately 312 boats.
One of the city’ s most special places includes the 100-year-old Northome Bridge. In 2021, the bridge was dedicated to former mayor Paul Skrede to honor all of his work to replace it.
Another spot Deephaven is known for is its Cottagewood General Store, which got its start in 1895 on Cottagewood Avenue and has been there ever since. The store may only be open May through October, but it continues to serve as a place for community events, festivities and functions as a spot for ice cream, coffee, gifts and more. For opening day information and event updates, visit cottagewoodusa. com.
The Minnetonka Yacht Club founded in 1882 serves as an iconic sailing venue next to Carson Bay’ s Lighthouse Island. The yacht club is one of the oldest yacht clubs in on the lake. It boasts an exceptional racing fleet, including A Scows, E Scows, MC Scows, Ynglings, Catamarans, X Boats, Optimists, Melges 15s, and the Open Fleet. However, it also functions as a go-to for many lakeside events, all of which generally goes through mid-May until mid-September.
Minnetonka Community Education Center in Deephaven provides space for up to 250 people. The facility contains several gathering spaces, conference and craft room areas, as well as two special-use areas: the council chambers and the banquet, dining and community room. For more information, visit minnetonkaschools. org / district / mcec.
Deephaven is cared for by the Deephaven Police Department, contracts with the Excelsior Fire District for fire service and resides in the Minnetonka School District.
City council meetings are held at Deephaven City Hall, 20225 Cottagewood Road. Information on all meetings can be found at cityofdeephaven. org.
