Monarch Meet-Ups is a walk and talk program designed to bring Monarchs together for a friendly and casual walk around campus. The primary aim is to encourage both physical activity and social interaction, fostering a sense of community among the campus community. Participants meet outside the Student Recreation and Well-Being Center and set off on a ~ 2-mile route. When the weather isn ' t conducive to outdoor activities, the meet-up moves inside to the SRWC’ s indoor track.

This program offers more than just the opportunity to stretch your legs. It allows Monarchs to create connections with others in a supportive, positive atmosphere. The program ' s organizers emphasize three ground rules to enrich the experience: greeting everyone warmly, making an effort to converse with different participants each session, and nurturing an environment where all participants feel welcome and supported.
Walking, as a form of exercise, has proven benefits for mental health. Research indicates that walking 30 minutes a day, five times a week can reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression. For Monarchs looking to cultivate consistency in their exercise routines, walking in a group can be particularly effective; studies suggest that exercising with others increases the likelihood of maintaining the habit long-term.
Meet-Ups are structured so that Monarchs can join alone or with friends, offering flexibility and ease in participation. It’ s a space to enjoy the outdoors, or the indoors when necessary, meet new people, and get moving without the pressure of competition or cost. For many at ODU, it represents an accessible and enjoyable way to break their routine, re-energize, and build new friendships on campus.
