GDC K-9 Special Agent Wiggins and Johnson County Deputy Ivey prevented a planned contraband drop at the Johnson State Prison . The contraband consisted of approximately 2,070 grams of loose leaf tobacco , and cellphones intended to be sold or used inside the state institution .
This package is among many other packages that have been flown in by drone or carried in by foot and thrown over the exterior fence .
The issue of contraband possession by offenders pose a significant challenge not only for the state of Georgia but also for correctional agencies nationwide . A notable method by which contraband is being introduced into correctional facilities is through drones , particularly as their payload capacities expand . This situation exemplifies the daily challenges faced by our correctional officers .
