Aztek Countertops opens up shop in Forest Lake

AMY DOEUN Contributing writer
Thirty years ago Gustavo Aguilar started Aztek Countertops in Houston, Texas. In those early days, he started out cutting granite countertops by hand outside the family home.“ It was really hard work,” said daughter-in-law Jessica Aguilar.
After relocating his family to Minnesota, Gustavo, along with his wife Gabriella, and sons Gustavo Jr., Rodrigo and Alejandro, expanded the business to include more natural stone options and the company’ s specialty porcelain. Since then, it’ s become a family business, with Aguilar joining in as a sales representative.
Aztek Countertops works to“ bring innovations to new homes whether it is a small vanity or an entire house,” according to the website. The company also works on remodels.
“ We pretty much work with everyone; We work directly with customers or contractors. Our business is a lot of referrals,” Aguilar said.
The company works with all natural stone.
“ Our specialty is porcelain,” Jessica said.“ That is something we have been working with for quite some time.”
What makes their porcelain special is that they work with one sheet for countertops, back splash and even shower walls, so no grout lines are shown.
Aguilar said that lack of grout helps with bathrooms or kitchens in the north.
“ A lot of people have hard water or well water, it is so much easier to clean without the grout lines,” she said.
The new facility in Forest Lake, on the south side of Highway 97 near the juncture of Highway 61, is nearing its completion.
“ We are just waiting on some new machines to cut porcelain,” Aguilar said.
Over the next 5 years they are aiming to add a slab yard in the area with over 300 counters from quartz, marble, granite and of course porcelain. Aztek Countertops is the only certified dealer in Minnesota for Tuffskin Surface Protection. This product provides sealing for natural stone so it won’ t stain. Porcelain is also naturally scratch resistant, very durable and heat resistant up to 400 degrees.
“ We believe that no job is too big and no job is too small. We have customers come in with a certain budget and we like to work in that budget,” Aguilar said.“ We really like to be able to help families. We are a family-owned business and we like serving families.”
In the future, the family would like to expand the business across the midwest, as well.
The family encourages you to stop by the showroom once its open, or visit aztekcountertops. com.
