EDINA
COMMUNITY GUIDE 2025
Edina is a city that continues to develop
Edina is a convenient destination for businesses and those looking to patronize them.
As a first-ring suburb, Edina spans some of the busiest highways in the state, welcoming families and individuals from near and far as pockets of the city transform through redevelopment.
Minutes from downtown Minneapolis and the Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, the city acts as a hub just outside of the Twin Cities, offering a unique mix of retail, office and housing opportunities.
Although the city is already 98 % developed, there is still room for improvements, renovations and redevelopments under the guidance of the Edina Planning Commission and City Council.
First established in 1929, the Planning Commission ensures that city development follows the Comprehensive Plan, a ten-year guiding document( last updated in 2020).
In the 1950s, the Dayton brothers worked to open the first indoor mall in the United States, known as the Southdale Mall. The mall kickstarted the city’ s draw to regional visitors. Since then, the area around the mall has become a vibrant corridor, featuring the high-end shopping center, the Galleria, and the M Health Fairview Southdale Hospital.
Today’ s redevelopment landscape is majority privately funded, with 60 + major projects constructed using private funds since the recovery from the Great Recession.
Inflation and federal efforts to control it since the COVID-19 pandemic has slowed the growth of capital markets. Despite this, Edina has continued to see changes to its landscape. Areas around France Avenue will soon be a hotbed for redevelopment.
A handful of acres near 70th and France has redevelopment plans in the works, including office and residential buildings, beginning with the modernization of the U. S. Bank branch. Locally dubbed“ the bunker,” the Macy ' s Furniture Gallery on France Avenue will be transformed into three seven-story buildings and an 11-story building, which will house office space, 49 senior condominiums and just under 10,000 square feet for retail. Just across the street, a six-story apartment with underground parking will make its way to Edina.
As the city continues to evolve, and new proposals and ideas arise, it’ ll be up to city officials and residents to choose how they want the community to look in the future.
