EDINA
COMMUNITY GUIDE 2025
Edina values sustainability
Edina is committed to achieving a future where all city residents can thrive. As climate change issues persist, the city finds guidance in its Climate Action Plan, which includes several steps to address these trends, such as increasing the city’ s tree canopy and focusing on reducing community-wide carbon emissions.
The Climate Action Plan includes 200 actions that residents or city officials can take to support sustainable practices and outlines the city’ s goal of achieving net zero carbon emissions by 2050.
A sustainable future cannot be achieved by one person alone – and that’ s why the city has opted to put parameters in place for success, allowing city staff to stay accountable and encourage residents to make personal choices for the greater good. Some actionable items have included advancing walking infrastructure in the city and expanding community garden opportunities.
The city’ s efforts to reduce its impact on the environment extend to the minimization of food waste. Edina has an organics recycling program in which haulers with service provider Vierkant Disposal come to residents’ homes to pick up organics waste, like leftover food, compostable products and food-soiled paper products. Since its launch in 2020, thousands of tons of waste have been diverted from landfills. And the city helps residents participate in the program by providing free rolls of compostable bags at the Edina Senior Center and offering four free drop-off sites for multi-family building residents. Businesses have also found ways to support sustainability efforts. Edina’ s Green Business Recognition program acknowledges those companies by giving them a designation of either gold, silver or bronze – earned by taking“ green” actions like recycling or being aware of their energy use. In Edina, some of the gold status businesses have included the Galleria Shopping Center, Wooden Hill Brewing Company and Western National Insurance Group.
With the help of city staff, residents and businesses, those who live and work in Edina can start to make changes to mitigate their environmental impacts.
