Senior Center provides space to connect
The Eden Prairie Senior Center fosters a strong mission: To provide for social, recreational, educational, psychological and physical needs; enhance the visibility of older adults; and promote their participation in all aspects of community life.
Through a lively variety of programs for adults and seniors of all ages, the center manages to do just that. Staff members work closely with participants to showcase relevant and important programs that promote lifelong learning and cater to evolving interests.
Available on weekdays and some evenings, the Senior Center is known for popular programming and activities within fitness and wellness activities, discussion and support groups, special events and trips as well as those lifelong learning classes. Classes and activities can be found in four categories: cards and games; crafts and creative arts; discussion and learning; as well as fitness, health and wellness.
Under cards and games, there are opportunities to learn the 500 card game, cribbage, duplicate bridge, hand and foot canasta, mahjong, Mexican train, partner bridge, pinochle, Texas Hold‘ Em poker as well as Shuffle, Deal and Play bridge.
Under crafts and creative arts, seniors can get artsy with crafting, making greeting cards, taking part in a quilting group or woodworking in the woodshop.
Under discussion and learning, minds can be stimulated through book clubs, a caregiver support group, coffee with the cops, current events, defensive driver safety courses, fireside chats with the Eden Prairie Fire Department and health insurance help.
Under fitness, health and wellness, seniors can find ways to get involved in bike club, Happy Feet Footcare, an indoor golf league at Inside Edge, the Live Well Health series, pickleball, SilverSneakers yoga and the walking club.
As for resources, the Senior Center offers on-site help from aging-related organizations that focus on seniors in the community. Some of the available services are provided by the Eden Prairie Professionals in Aging, a collaborative of local service providers in the field of aging, while others are provided by MinnesotaHelp. info, the National Council on Aging, Vital Aging Network and the Senior LinkAge line. Upholding your independence as you grow older can be challenging, but the Metro Area Agency on Aging can help by providing the Senior LinkAge Line. The agency services in partnership with the Minnesota Board on Aging to help connect seniors with transportation, chore help, meals, housing options, legal services and more.
