Machias Bay
Bask in the salty air and sun of Roque Bluffs State Park, a halfmile sand and pebble beach on Englishmen Bay. Park the car and change in the public restrooms before spending the day on the beach or exploring the trail system behind the shallow waters of Simpson Pond.
Back inland, around Northfield, visitors will find plenty of places to paddle, boat, fish, camp, and swim on the Machias River or Long, Bog, and Fulton Lakes.
On the East Machias River, the Downeast Salmon Federation’ s Peter Gray Parr Project salmon conservation program of rewilding is having a positive impact on the recovery of wild Atlantic salmon in Maine.
On the Trails
Otherworldly fall foliage and mild weather make Machias Bay a perfect destination for an Autumn or early winter hiking, biking, or ATV-ing trip. There are a multitude of trails accessible in a short radius of downtown Machias including the Down East Sunrise Trail, Machias River Preserve, and Maine Coast Heritage Trust trail systems.
Winter delivers sparkling natural beauty amoungst thousands of acres of preserved lands for snowshoeing, skiing, ice skating, and fishing.
