Wild Blueberry Heritage Center, Columbia Falls
Located just off-shore in Frenchman Bay, densely forested Preble Island is known for its cobble beaches and roosting eagles. Kayak and camp through the Maine Island Trail or hike the Pigeon Hill Preserve trail for great views of Petit Manan Island and Lighthouse. Hop aboard a wildlifewatching boat tour in Milbridge or Winter Harbor to spot Atlantic Puffins and more.
Milbridge, Harrington, and Addison offer quiet nature trails and scenic vistas complete with colorful lobster boats bobbing in the harbor. Visitors are invited to stop the Downeast Institute on Great Wass Island to learn about how they culture shellfish seed thus restoring and creating economic opportunities for harvesters and aquaculturists throughout coastal Maine and beyond.
Scenic Drives
The Schoodic National Scenic Byway connects communities across the Schoodic Peninsula, starting at the Waukeag Station scenic turnout at the Hancock and Sullivan bridge, and winds through the Schoodic section of Acadia National Park. The Bold Coast National Scenic Byway begins in the service center of Milbridge and extends to the Canadian border in Calais.
With the Kids
During Maine Wild Blueberry Weekend in August, families can visit the Wild Blueberry Heritage Center and rake their own berries at nearby wild blueberry farms in Cherryfield, Columbia Falls, and Jonesboro.
Explore the seven Kids Quest sites along the Schoodic National Scenic Byway to learn about the region’ s history, ecology and culture.
