ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE

ISCHEMIC HEART DISEASE
Faculty within the UAB Cardiovascular Institute use a collaborative approach to treat ischemic heart disease, offering a full spectrum of treatment options that are tailored to each individual patient’ s needs.
As a high-volume, regional referral center, our program continues to provide the most innovative therapies while meeting or exceeding national benchmarks for quality of care in the treatment of ischemic heart disease.
SURGICAL INTERVENTION Our cardiovascular surgeons perform procedures such as on-pump and off-pump( beating-heart) coronary artery bypass revascularization, ventricular aneurysm resection, and myocardial revascularization in patients with advanced heart failure. UAB also offers total arterial revascularization, with utilization of bilateral internal thoracic and radial arteries. Over the past five years, our team has upheld a 3-star STS CABG Composite Quality Rating, the highest achievable, while performing more than 3,400 isolated CABG procedures, reflecting both quality and experience.
PERCUTANEOUS CORONARY INTERVENTION( PCI) Our interventional cardiologists use the latest available technology for percutaneous coronary revascularization in the treatment of ischemic heart disease, and they have extensive expertise in evaluating and treating complex lesions, including chronic total occlusions. Mechanical circulatory support devices, such as the Impella pump and intra-aortic balloon pump( IABP), are available for highrisk PCI procedures. Since 2020, our team has performed more than 4,000 PCI procedures, reflecting our depth of experience and commitment to advanced, high-quality care.
Only Comprehensive Heart Attack Center in Alabama as certified by The Joint Commission
Rated‘ High Performing’ in heart attack and heart bypass surgery by U. S. News & World Report
Achieved the highest STS 3-Star Rating in all six adult cardiac procedure categories

HIGHLIGHTS

• Ranked High Performing by U. S. News & World Report for heart bypass surgery and heart attack care.
• Achieved the highest STS Composite Quality Rating for isolated coronary artery bypass grafting( CABG).
• Designated as a Comprehensive Heart Attack Center( CHAC) by The Joint Commission— the only hospital in Alabama with this certification.
• Honored by the American Heart Association with the Mission: Lifeline STEMI Silver Plus Award.
• An average of 752 isolated CABG procedures were performed annually between 2022 and 2024.
• A total of 2,535 percutaneous coronary interventions( PCIs) were completed during the same period.
• Achieved an average median time to PCI of 48 minutes over the past 3 years, consistently outperforming the ACC guideline of < 90 minutes.
• Our radial-first PCI approach has improved clinical outcomes, reduced recovery times, enhanced the overall patient experience.
• In 2024, performance ranked above the 75th percentile in all risk-standardized mortality CathPCI quality metrics.
• Maintained an average observed-to-expected PCI mortality ratio of 0.83 from 2022 – 2024, reflecting sustained excellence in outcomes.
• In 2024, 50 % of PCI cases were classified as complex and high-risk, involving technologies such as IABP, Impella, ROTABLATOR rotational atherectomy, and Shockwave Coronary Intravascular Lithotripsy.
• Enrolled in the Door-To-Unload( DTU) STEMI trial with the Impella CP and PROTECT IV study of Impella heart pumps for high-risk PCIs.
