in progress: 330,000 acres
Guinea-Bissau | Expand Africa’ s Premier Green Sea Turtle Sanctuary
Consisting of 88 separate islands and inlets, the Bijagós Archipelago off the coast of Guinea-Bissau is Africa’ s most important nesting site for sea turtles. Five of the world’ s seven sea turtle species nest here, including both the Critically Endangered Hawksbill Turtle and the Endangered Green Turtle. These waters support one of the richest fisheries in West Africa and provide vital habitat for the Critically Endangered Atlantic Humpback Dolphin, the Vulnerable African Manatee, and several species of critically endangered sharks and rays, including the Scalloped Hammerhead, Largetooth Sawfish, Blackchin Guitarfish, and Lusitanian Cownose Ray.
Overfishing, illegal fishing camps, sport fishing, and tourism increasingly threaten the Bijagós Archipelago and its surrounding waters. With your support, Rainforest Trust and partner
Partenariat Régional pour la Conservation de la zone côtière et Marine en Afrique de l’ Ouest( PRCM) will help safeguard 330,000 acres with the designation of two new marine protected areas.
