CONGO BASIN
With approximately 20 percent of the world’ s land area, Africa is a marvel of biodiversity. From its shores and savannas to the depths of the Congo rainforest, Africa is home to approximately one quarter of the Earth’ s mammal species and one fifth of all bird and reptile species. The continent also supports approximately one sixth of the world’ s remaining forests, primarily the Congo rainforest, which is second only to the Amazon in size.
Increasingly, threats loom large throughout Africa. Unsustainable commercial fishing threatens essential nesting beaches for sea turtles off the continent’ s west coast. Logging, agriculture, and charcoal production drive deforestation in the Congo Basin. And habitat loss and degradation threaten the survival of species from cloud forests, mountainsides, and more.
Land conservation is the answer to these threats, and is central to all we do at Rainforest Trust. Every dollar donated to our Conservation Action Fund( CAF) goes directly to support our land protection projects around the world, allowing us and our partners to take rapid action when and where it is needed most to safeguard species and the habitats they rely upon.
