US / MS STUDENT CONSEQUENCES FOR UNEXCUSED ABSENCES Students will be allowed a maximum three unexcused absences per class per semester before receiving consequences. See Consequences below.

• 6 Unexcused Absences in a class = 2 Hours of EMD’ s, parent meet ing, and attendance plan
• 8 Unexcused Absences in a class = Saturday School, conference with parents to discuss probation and / or possible non-renewal of CPA enrollment contract
Additionally, state law requires that students with 10 consecutive or 15 total unexcused absences in a semester may lose their driver’ s license or be ineligible to obtain a driver’ s license.
CHRONIC ABSENTEEISM- PARENT NOTIFICATION
Once a student has 5 total absences( excused and unexcused) in a semester the following procedure will be initiated by the school administration:
Total Absences Excused / Unexcused( per Semester):
• 5 total absences = letter / email from admin notifying parents
• 8 total absences = phone conference with admin regarding attendance
• 10 total absences = in person attendance conference with admin
TRUANCY- PARENT NOTIFICATION
All K-12 students in Tennessee are subject to compulsory attendance laws. The Academy is required by law to maintain a policy addressing truancy and to report students with excessive unexcused absences to the student’ s resident public school district for further truancy intervention and potential referral to juvenile court. In accordance with state law, parents must monitor the student’ s school attendance and require the student to attend school. In compliance with these requirements, the Academy’ s compulsory attendance policy for addressing unexcused absences is as follows:
TOTAL ABSENCES UNEXCUSED( PER YEAR):
• 5 unexcused absences = letter / email from admin notifying parents
• 8 unexcused absences = phone conference with admin
• 10 unexcused absences = in person attendance conference with admin and truancy referral to student’ s resident public school district. Potential placement on probation and / or possible non-renewal of CPA enrollment contract.
PROBATION DUE TO EXCESSIVE ABSENCES
Students may be placed on probation due to attendance issues by the administration at any time during the year if it is determined that the student is not meeting the attendance standards of the school in a satisfactory manner. Probation will include a number of conditions that a student must comply with to improve attendance, and may also include, but not be limited to, prohibitions on participation in extracurricular activities or other aspects of school life until attendance goals are met. If, at the end of a semester or academic year, the administration advises against a student returning, the student will not be issued a re-enrollment contract, or the student’ s re-enrollment contract may be withdrawn.
MAKING UP MISSED WORK
Students are obligated to make-up work missed during any absences, regardless of whether or not the absence is excused, school-sponsored, emergency, or for full or partial days. Students will have an equal number of days to make up work as were absent( 1 day absent = 1 day to make up work).
UPPER SCHOOL ASAP
When upper school students miss all or part of a school day, they are required to check in with their teacher upon return to see what makeup work they have and if they have any assessments( quiz / test) in ASAP( Absent Student Assignment Procedure). Students are responsible to make up their assessments in ASAP on the day they return to school unless otherwise directed by the teacher
ASAP meets twice a day, for 50 minutes before and 50 minutes after every school day. Students may select the time to attend ASAP that best fits their schedule. Failure to sign in to ASAP will result in one demerit on the first day, one demerit for each subsequent day.
Students have one day to make up their work for each day they were absent( i. e., if a student is absent on Monday, all make-up work would be due at 7:30 a. m. on Wednesday). However, students will be expected to take missed tests on the day they return to school, during ASAP.
If a student arrives late to school and misses a test, it must be taken in afternoon ASAP that same day. If a student is absent and misses a test review, the student is still expected to take the test on the announced day.
LEAVING CAMPUS DURING THE ACADEMIC DAY
No student may leave campus during the school day unless accompanied by the student’ s parent or with a permission slip on file. The Academy will not release a student to anyone other than the student’ s parent or guardian unless permission has been verified by a parent and approval given by the school office. For more information on special cases involving upper school students with their own vehicles, turn to CITIZENSHIP AND CONDUCT / Student Automobile Policy.
UPPER SCHOOL A student will be dismissed from school for an appointment, after a written note / email or phone call from a parent submitted to the school office prior to the appointment, preferably by 8 a. m. As always, a student must sign out at the school office before leaving and sign in when returning. Students who become ill during the academic day must be dismissed by the school nurse. For more information, turn to SUPPORT SERVICES / Clinic and Illness / Dismissal from School Due to Illness or Injury. For more information about students driving themselves home when ill, turn to CITIZENSHIP AND CONDUCT / Student Automobile Policy.
SENIOR OFF-CAMPUS PRIVILEGES Seniors have the privilege of leaving campus during both Senior Lunch and Senior Option. Both of these off-campus times are a privilege, not a right. In order for seniors to participate in these two options, they must meet certain behavioral, academic, and attendance standards.
Senior Lunch: Unless otherwise announced, Senior Lunch is attached to LION Time. Therefore, all Seniors with the Senior Lunch privilege are not required to attend LION Time. All seniors that have above a 70 in all of their classes and are not on behavior or attendance probation, will have an extended Senior Lunch that includes both lunch and LION time. Seniors that do not meet these requirements will not be allowed to leave campus for lunch and will be required to attend and assigned LION time.
SENIOR OPTION: Senior Option is a study hall for seniors in which they are allowed to leave campus during that class. It is a privilege to participate in this class. cpalions. org / 7
