The following course sequence is designed to provide the necessary mathematical knowledge and skills for students who , following graduation from Thornton Academy , plan to attend a four-year college program and may major in a math or science field , or who may apply to a selective four-year college regardless of major . Students enrolled in honors and advanced courses can expect concepts to be covered at a quicker pace , expect work both in and out of class and to apply the concepts covered on tests , quizzes and projects . Students are expected to show a deeper understanding of the content covered .

Algebra I Honors

1 Credit
Students will gain a thorough and extensive study of linear functions and graphing on the xy-coordinate system . Students will learn to graph linear equations , calculate and identify slope , solve and graph inequalities , and work with systems of linear equations . Students will use equations to model and solve authentic problems , interpret graphs , make predictions based on data , and create graphs from a table of values . The course will also include the study of quadratic functions .

Geometry Honors

1 Credit Prerequisite : Algebra 1 Honors
Students will develop spatial concepts and insight into the relationships between plane figures , such as points , lines , polygons , and circles . Students will apply algebraic principles , including the use of coordinates , to geometric problems , and explore the measurement of two- and threedimensional figures . The concept of proof is a focus of this course , fostering an appreciation of the power of logic as a tool for understanding the world .

Algebra II Honors

1 Credit
Prerequisites : Algebra I Honors and Geometry Honors , or teacher recommendation
This course will focus on the study of functions , including linear , quadratic , polynomial , rational , exponential , logarithmic , and conic functions ( if time permits ). A graphing calculator will be a useful and , at times , necessary tool for successful completion of the class .

College Algebra Honors

1 Credit ( 1 TA credit is equivalent to 3 potential SMCC credits )
Prerequisite : Three math credits , successful completion of Algebra II or teacher recommendation
Eligible students will receive 3 college credits in Math at Southern Maine Community College ( SMCC ). Students will study the concepts of variables and symbols , scientific notation , formulas and literal equations slope , intercepts , and equations of lines , graphs of linear and quadratic functions ; graphs of linear inequalities ; solving systems of linear equations ; polynomials , products and factors ; roots , rational exponents , and complex numbers ; rational expressions ; solving linear , quadratic , and higher order equations ; solving linear inequalities ; an introduction to exponential and logarithmic functions , and applied problem solving .

Quantitative Reasoning Honors

1 Credit ( 1 TA credit is equivalent to 3 potential SMCC credits ) Prerequisite : Three math credits , successful completion of Algebra II or teacher recommendation
Eligible students will receive 3 credits in Math at Southern Maine Community College ( SMCC ). Students will explore connections between mathematics and various facets of modern life . Quantitative reasoning enables both understanding and decision-making about aspects of work , money management , civic participation , and recreation . Topics in this course include unit analysis , percentages , personal finance , statistics , probability , linear and exponential growth , mathematical modeling , and geometry .

Pre-Calculus Honors

1 Credit Prerequisite : Algebra II Honors and Geometry Honors
Students will study the unifying nature of functions with an emphasis on trigonometric , exponential , and logarithmic functions . Visualization and analysis of graphs will help students develop insight into mathematical ideas . A study of sequences and series and probability will be incorporated .

AP Pre-Calculus

1 Credit Prerequisite : Geometry and Algebra II
Students will build a deeper understanding of modeling and functions as well as examine scenarios through several representations which will prepare them for college level math and science classes . This course covers content and skills which are common in college precalculus courses and help to build a foundation mathematically for students interested in a career in mathematics fields or the sciences .
