Nonfiction Literature / Journalism

1 Credit Prerequisite : Teacher recommendation
This year-long college preparatory reading and writing elective will explore various writing styles and genres . Students will read and discuss classic writing examples while creating their own original pieces . Taking on roles such as reporters , photojournalists , designers , and writers for our online news magazine , students will be actively involved in authentic work . Daily mini-lessons will introduce students to exemplary work in the field . Moreover , during a portion of each class , students will work in a writing lab / newsroom environment on their individual assignments . The course emphasizes understanding the specific style or genre , delving into the historical aspects of this work , and recognizing the literary or historical significance of this type of writing .

Creative Writing

1 Credit Prerequisite : Teacher recommendation
Creative Writing is a writing-intensive course designed for students interested in writing , regardless of their experience level . Students will explore short fiction , poetry , and various forms of creative nonfiction . Through engaging writing prompts , workshops , and peer critiques , students will develop their unique voices , refine their storytelling techniques , and experiment with different literary styles . The course will culminate with an independent study , allowing students to delve into a genre of their choice that was not covered in the class . This may include writing for the screen , drama , graphic stories , novel writing , video game narratives , songs , podcasting , and more .

Literature of American Sport

1 Credit Prerequisite : Teacher recommendation
This college preparatory English course will explore sports and related issues through fiction , non-fiction , and dramatic readings . Selections include works such as Travis Roy ’ s Eleven Seconds , August Wilson ’ s Fences , and John Grisham ’ s Bleachers . Additionally , students will engage in an in-depth research project , argumentative writing , choice readings with various writing , and oral assignments also being required .

Monsters and Misfits

1 Credit Prerequisite : Teacher recommendation
Monsters and misfits are pervasive in our culture because they represent both individual and societal fears and anxieties . In this course , students will examine the nature of our fears and how monsters and misfits come to symbolize cultural anxieties through the study of the horror genre . Students will apply critical theories to examine and identify classical literary misfits and monsters and their manifestations in the 21st century through research , writing , and critical cultural analysis of horror films and literature . Major literary works studied may include Frankenstein , Salem ’ s Lot , and The Haunting of Hill House .
