Note from the Editor
I’ m honoured to be the Editor for the second issue of the School of the Arts Literary Magazine, and appreciative that this tradition has been set into motion. As the Arts & Humanities grow every year, I believe that this literary magazine will uphold a yearly tradition of showcasing writing talent across the school, giving future years a snapshot of life into the year of its creation.
We’ re extremely lucky this year to have a wonderful cross-section of the many disciplines in School of the Arts, ranging from the Department of English, Philosophy, Architecture, and even a writer who is a registered NHS GP. This magazine is proof the arts knows no boundaries in the academic landscape, and writers from different backgrounds will always enable empathy across fields through the medium of literature.
This year our illustrator is Arianna Potente, an architecture student we commissioned for our cover and interior illustrations when she was only in her first year at University of Liverpool. Myself and the Assistant Editor worked with Arianna to create a fun and sketchy style of artwork to represent an iconic building on campus – the clocktower. The clocktower represents the university spectacularly, showcasing‘ the original redbrick’ and has always been a centrepiece of the campus. I hope that our future artworks will continue to represent our beautiful university, along with showcasing talent from within the School of the Arts in a visual format.
The content of this year’ s magazine verges towards the melancholic – a snapshot of the times indeed. From Liverpool’ s clubs and pubs, crowded rainy streets, new friendships and love in a university’ s setting; to the letters from people missing their homes; to speculative dystopic futures. The stories within this magazine are an entire spectrum of hurt and hope, joy and humour, loneliness and introspection. We have poems inspired by James Joyce and romantic literature, poems of pain and loss, even a poem from the viewpoint of a slug! I hope it is clear to see, upon reading this volume, what I have chosen to name this issue Intersections.
It was truly an honour to be Editor of Issue 2 for the School of the Arts Literary Magazine. I hope you all enjoy this issue as much as I have enjoyed curating it. I’ m very much looking forward to seeing what each passing year entails.
Eleanor McAdam Editor for the School of the Arts Literary Magazine, 2025-2026.
