Bennington Battle Monument Photo by Lorianna Weathers Photography
Steeped in history, The Shires lays claim to Vermont’ s first chartered town and our first state capital. It was here that Ethan Allen and the Green Mountain Boys defended land they had purchased from the Governor of New Hampshire against claims by the State of New York, and from here that Patriots marched to the pivotal Battle of Bennington in 1777. The impressive Battle Monument rises 306 feet above its footprint and is Vermont’ s most visited Historic Site; an elevator ride to the observation deck yields spectacular views of The Shires’ mountains and valleys.

City dwellers came to escape the heat, play golf, make art, go fishing, and enjoy country life. Today, The Shires offers all these leisure activities and more. You can play a round on our nationally ranked golf courses, drive through covered bridges, cast for trout, ride a horse, ski and snowboard( in season), and explore outstanding museums like the Bennington Museum and the American Fly Fishing Museum.
