ITINERARY: OUTDOOR ACTIVITIES, EXPERIENCES, & CULTURE
POWER UP AT THE COFFEE BAR Start your day at one of Bennington’ s best coffee spots, located inside the renovated Putnam Block at the center of town. Look for the sidewalk tables and step into the stylish interior to place your order. P. S. They were also named Chamber Member of the Year in 2022!
STEP INTO THE PAST The cemetery adjacent to the Old First Church in Old Bennington never gets old. Beautifully carved 18th-century headstones, the gravesite of poet Robert Frost, and that of a local man whose body was recovered after his ship( the Titanic) went down: there is much to see-- and ponder. Stroll( or drive) up Monument Ave past historic homes and take in the Bennington Battle Monument( an elevator will take you up inside in season).
BYWAYS AND BRIDGES Did you now that Vermont has more covered bridges per square mile than any state in the Union? You’ ll see why if you take a quick drive from the Monument to North Bennington via Silk Road and Murphy Road: you’ ll rumble through three of these iconic bridges. You may want to stop for a picture at the last of them( the Henry Bridge), river fishermen sometimes included.
WHO’ S HUNGRY? Back in the car, pass through the charming village of North Bennington and take Route 67 east to Historic Route 7A in Shaftsbury. Don’ t miss a chance to immerse yourself in all things Scottish( including good things to eat) at Rablogan Castle of Scotland just north in Arlington. The Arlington Inn and Spa puts on a terrific Sunday brunch, too.
