By the 45 – 60 credit mark:
• The student must have a minimum GPA of 3.0
• The student must have completed at least six semester credits in college level mathematics and at least three semester credits in college level composition and three credits in English.
• Secondary education students must apply to the discipline program, as well as the College of Arts, Sciences, and Professional Studies( certification) at the 48-credit mark.
If students reach the 48 – 60 credit mark and have not achieved all of the above requirements, they cannot continue in the Professional Core coursework toward PA Certification. Students will then remain in the Education Studies program or explore a new major if they choose to do so.
Initial Acceptance: All education students entering the University will follow the curriculum for the Bachelor of Education Studies. Students desiring Pennsylvania Teacher Certification must meet the aforementioned criteria by the 48 – 60 credit mark. Students who successfully meet this requirement will be admitted to a certification program of their choice.
NOTE: Transfer students will work with their respective advisors to evaluate coursework completed at other colleges / universities.
Internal / External Transfers: Students transferring to Gwynedd Mercy University will have all previous coursework completed at regionally accredited institutions evaluated for transfer and will be expected to complete all remaining program requirements at Gwynedd Mercy University.
Academic Requirements for Certification Programs: By the 45 – 60 credit mark:
• The student must have a minimum overall GPA of 3.0.
• Any grade below a C + in a course within the major must be repeated.
• The student must have completed at least six credits in college level mathematics and at least three credits in college level composition and three credits in English.
• Secondary education students must apply to their discipline program, as well as the College of Arts, Sciences, and Professional Studies( certification) by the 45 – 60 credit mark.
Prior to February 1st of the pre-student teaching / student teaching semester, a student is required to file an application for pre-student and student teaching in the senior year. Final acceptance into the student teaching program is decided by the Teacher Education Committee and the Dean.
Attendance and Punctuality: Students are required to attend courses and field placements every day and to be punctual, prepared, and enthusiastic about the tasks.
Absences, late arrivals or early departures are not acceptable during student teaching. In an extreme emergency, the student must:
• Obtain approval from the Coordinator of Field Placements to be absent.
• Inform the cooperating teacher, university supervisor, and seminar professor.
• Work with the university supervisor to make up the absence. Any absence( s) will be reviewed by the program faculty to determine whether the final student teaching grade will be impacted. Without approval by the coordinator, an absence, lateness, or early departure may result in removal from student teaching and an inability to become certified.
