Firefi ghters respond when disaster strikes
The residents of Crystal , New Hope , Golden Valley and Robbinsdale all rely on the dedication and professionalism of fire department personnel to keep them safe from fire , natural hazards and other dangerous situations .
The West Metro Fire-Rescue District is a joint fire department between Crystal and New Hope . It serves the 11 square miles of the two cities . The district was created in 1998 and employs over 60 firefighters , most are paid-on-call .
West Metro ’ s jurisdiction protects critical infrastructure of the state , including limited access highways , three rail lines with about 30 trains daily , a major underground petroleum pipeline and Crystal Airport . Its jurisdiction also includes an underground water reservoir that is a vital component of the Tri-City Water Commission .
West Metro has three fire stations and an administrative / operational staff . West Metro provides fire prevention with code enforcement , fire investigation , fire suppression , emergency medical care , vehicle extrication , water and ice rescue , hazardous materials response and mitigation , airport crash-fire-rescue and emergency management .

The Robbinsdale Fire Department was organized in 1909 . The department is a paid-on-call department with a staff of 30 firefighters . The station is at 4104 Hubbard Ave . N ., and shares a building with the Robbinsdale Police Department .
The department answers calls for structure , grass and vehicle fires , crash extrication , hazardous material spills , fire and carbon monoxide alarms , emergency medical services , natural gas and smoke smells , plus water emergencies .

The Golden Valley Fire Department was created in 1943 and provides fire suppression , fire code enforcement and fire prevention services . The department is headed by a chief and a team of assistant chiefs and inspectors . It is a duty-crew model . The department has three stations and receives an estimated 800 calls a year .
