Stillwater also has an opening at fullback , with several vying for playing time at that spot , the coach suggested .
“ We have a whole slew of guys , but we need more time to determine who ’ s going to play fullback ,” LaBore said .
John Halley was the biggest departure from the offensive line for the Ponies after earning all sub-district honors and receiving the team ’ s Most Outstanding Offensive Lineman Award . The Ponies have some experience returning on the line , with several players who started at least one game a year ago .
Seniors Jeffrey Akwuba ( 6-2 , 335 ), Siwon Joun ( 6-1 , 270 ), Christian Yangwakue ( 5-10 , 255 ) and Dominic Slaughter ( 6-1 , 220 ), along with juniors Tyler Curnow ( 6-2 , 260 ) and Nolan Von Behren ( 6-0 , 240 ) each contributed in the trenches last season and should provide a stronger push up front this season .
“ Our offensive line gives us a chance to hopefully move the ball on the ground
more ,” LaBore said . “ We ’ ve got six guys coming back who all started at least one game .
“ We ’ re not overly huge , but we have decent size . It ’ s a nice blend of size and speed .”
Senior Joe Fredkove ( 6-4 , 210 ), who joins John Karkula , Conor McGlynn , Cal Nitti and Siwon Youn in serving as captains , is expected to line up at tight end , with Carter Zollar and Wyatt Wells also in the mix at that spot .
Stillwater expects to present a more balanced approach on offense than a year ago , but that will also depend on match-ups .
“ We have a little of everything , but we don ’ t have all the pieces in place yet ,” La- Bore said . “ It ’ s a nice blend , but we need guys to emerge .
“ We ’ re handing it over to our players to recognize what the defense is doing and it depends what the defense is giving us . Woodbury , for example , had two 300-pound defensive tackles and for much of the game put seven or eight in the box so that just meant we were going to throw the ball .”
