Fire Station 2 : Renovated and ready to serve

Plymouth celebrated the official reopening of the city ’ s Fire Station 2 , located at 12000 Old Rockford Road , on June 1 , 2024 . The upgraded facility was anticipated to open in the summer of 2023 , but due to construction delays the project was not completed until 2024 .
The city ’ s original Fire Station 2 building was constructed in 1977 in eastern Plymouth and was demolished in spring 2021 . The City of Plymouth cited insufficient size and outdated infrastructure as the reason for the demolition , and worked to include modern technology , updated accommodations and better health and safety measures in the new station .
The Plymouth Fire Department works on a hybrid staffing model , made up of a mix of part-time and full-time firefighters . The new Fire Station 2 includes dormitories , a kitchen and a dayroom to accommodate firefighters at all times , and features on-site training facilities , all of which better accommodate the fire department ’ s demand for service and reduce response times . Overnight calls are especially improved by this model .
The building also features an emergency operations center and improved energy efficiency . The emergency alert system in the station was installed with staff ’ s wellbeing in mind , designed to give them a softer awakening in the middle of the night and reduce cardiac strain while also ensuring calls are answered .
Other measures incorporated into the new station for staff health and wellbeing include toxin reduction measures and hot-cold contamination zoning . With the hot-cold contamination zoning , potentially hazardous waste and material are kept to the outer parts of the building ( the hot zone ), while the living and working quarters remain sanitary ( a cold zone .) Staff have access to changing rooms and showers in the “ warm zone ” that allow them to go from a hot zone to a cold zone easily .
The city of Plymouth approved the Fire Station 2 project in 2021 , and city staff prioritized financial consideration , locking in a 10-year low bond rate that saved residents roughly $ 600,000 per year in taxpayer dollars over the life of the loan .
