Internationally recognized cardiovascular leader
Milton Packer , MD , is the Distinguished Scholar in Cardiovascular Science at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Institute and a recipient of the Hellenic Heart Failure Society Lifetime Achievement Award . Dr . Packer continued his award-winning work as an educator by presenting at conferences internationally and publishing more than 50 articles in peer-reviewed journals in fiscal year 2024 . He was appointed Deputy Editor of the European Heart Journal , which is the top-ranked journal in cardiovascular medicine . He is the only non- European Deputy Editor . Dr . Packer continues to author weekly blog posts on the widely respected physician news site , MedPage Today . The blog received the coveted Jesse H . Neal Prize for Best Blog / Commentary . Dr . Packer also continues his professorship and faculty appointment at the Imperial College in London , UK .
During the 2024 European Society of Cardiology Congress ( ESC ) in London , Dr . Packer also was awarded the ESC Gold Medal Award , the highest award the Society can present , for his exceptional contribution to cardiovascular medicine . Dr . Packer was also recognized in 2023 as the recipient of the Rene Laennee Lecturer and received Silver Medalist recognition .
Among his notable research involvement , Dr . Packer was the Executive Committee Chair and Principal Investigator for two industry sponsored trials : ( 1 ) the EMPEROR-Reduced Trial ( which is evaluating the effects of empagliflozin in patients with heart failure and a reduced ejection fraction ); and ( 2 ) the EMPEROR-Preserved Trial ( which is evaluating the effects of empagliflozin in patients with heart failure and a preserved ejection fraction ). Dr . Packer led the acquisition of the PARADIGM-HF database , the largest database ever assembled for a heart failure trial to Baylor Scott & White , and launched analyses of the database with cardiologists and statisticians .
