Vascular surgery is an important and growing part of the cardiovascular services program at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Fort Worth . Together with Baylor Scott & White All Saints Medical Center – Fort Worth , the vascular surgery department is becoming a recognized leader in the minimally invasive treatment of aortic aneurysms and arterial blockage of the arms , legs , kidneys , and other blood vessels , as well as disorders of the venous system . The vascular surgeons on the hospital ’ s medical staff , supported by an experienced vascular healthcare team , regularly perform patient procedures to treat peripheral artery disease ( PAD ) as well as carotid artery procedures , dialysis access , peripheral artery procedures , and thrombolysis .
Full spectrum of endovascular aortic aneurysm repair
The Fort Worth campus continues to expand its ability to perform advanced aortic aneurysm repair with capabilities to care for aortic pathology from the aortic valve to the iliac bifurcation . The surgeons on the hospital ’ s medical staff evaluate the full spectrum of aortic aneurysms to determine if EVAR , TEVAR or FEVAR or an open surgical repair is most appropriate . With advanced options like FEVAR ( fenestrated endovascular abdominal aortic aneurysm repair ), surgeons repair the aorta through small incisions in the patient ’ s groin or arms while still preserving blood flow to the critical branch arteries to the kidneys and other organs .

695 Vascular surgeries ( FY24 )

The program made giant strides in fiscal year 2024 with the first placement of the Abbott Esprit™ BTK Everolimus Eluting Resorbable Scaffold System in a patient in the Fort Worth / Dallas area . Mohammad Alqaim , MD , a vascular surgeon on the hospital ’ s medical staff , led a team of cath lab clinicians to perform this firstof-its-kind procedure in a patient with chronic limbthreatening ischemia ( CLTI ), a severe form of peripheral artery disease ( PAD ). A common condition associated with PAD , CLTI can be deadly with one in five patients receiving a lower limb amputation over time and a higher mortality rate .

Regarding FEVAR , “ It elevates the standard of aortic care in our area ,” says Mohammad Alqaim , MD , vascular surgeon on the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth and Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Fort Worth , who performed the first FEVAR procedure . “ These are skill sets that weren ’ t available in Tarrant County , and we ’ re proud that at Baylor Scott & White – Fort Worth , we are able to deliver these types of procedures .”
According to Abbott , the Esprit BTK Scaffold System is the first-and-only FDA-approved drug-eluting resorbable scaffold in BTK treatment . Compared to the current standard of care , balloon angioplasty , the Esprit BTK Scaffold System demonstrated superior efficacy , 74.5 % vs . 43.7 %, with a 30.8 % improvement in limb salvage and primary patency at one year . The results are from the LIFE-BTK randomized controlled trial in which Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Fort Worth was a participating sight . Other encouraging results from the trial include sustained everolimus elution to inhibit restenosis and maximize patency and a completely resorbable scaffold .
Four-Vessel Fenestrated Endovascular Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm Repair ( FEVAR ): Fenestrated Endovascular Aortic Repair , also known as FEVAR , is a minimally invasive procedure that allows surgeons to repair the aorta through small incisions in the patient ’ s groin or arms while still preserving blood flow to the critical branch arteries to the kidneys and other organs .
