Complex dialysis access
Known throughout the Southwest region for complex dialysis access procedures , the team was the first site in the US to use the latest generation system for creating an arteriovenous fistula through the use of flexible 4F magnetic catheters with radiofrequency electrodes for the delivery of radiofrequency energy , a new and innovative treatment option for patients with end-stage renal disease ( ESRD ). The technology enables vascular surgeons on the Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital – Dallas medical staff to provide ESRD patients with two additional fistula location options that are less invasive compared to a surgical fistula . Using this approach can help create and maintain AV access for patients on hemodialysis , which is an important expansion of the hospital ’ s complex dialysis access program .

Surfacer Inside-Out ® procedure
Two vascular surgeons on the medical staff at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital - Dallas , Stephen Hohmann , MD , FACS , and Javier Vasquez , MD , RPVI , FACS , were among the first in the nation to implant the Surfacer Inside-Out Access Catheter System in dialysis patients with a central venous catheter obstruction . The condition occurs in about 40 % of patients with a central venous line catheter . The Surfacer System is designed to efficiently and repeatedly gain central venous access by inserting the Surfacer System from the femoral area to the preferred right-sided access near the right jugular vein , the optimal location for placing a central venous catheter . This procedure could ultimately help save patients by restoring their ability to continue with dialysis .

The CONNECT-AV study is available for interested qualified patients . This is a prospective , multicenter clinical study of the BD WavelinQ EndoAVF System for the Creation of Arteriovnous AV Fistula in Patients Requiring Dialysis ( CONNECT-AV ). Principal investigator : Stephen Hohmann , MD , FACS .
InnAVasc - A study to evaluate the safety and effectiveness of the InnAVasc arteriovenous graft ( AVG ) when implanted in and used for hemodialysis in participants suffering from end stage renal failure ( ESRD ). The InnAVasc AVG is implanted and used similar to other standard of care dialysis grafts currently on the market . However , the InnAVasc AVG has been uniquely designed to potentially allow for immediate needle access ( same day as implant surgery ) as opposed to a wait of up to four weeks . Principal investigator : Stephen Hohmann , MD , FACS .
WAVE - Launched last fiscal year , WAVE study is a prospective , randomized , controlled , multicenter study comparing the Merit WRAPSODY™ endovascular stent graft to percutaneous transluminal angiopalsty for treatment of venous outflow circuit stenosis or occlusion in hemodialysis patients . Principal investigator : Stephen Hohmann , MD , FACS .
For the second year in a row , Stephen E . Hohmann , MD , FACS , was a featured speaker at the 27th European Vascular Course , a conference held in Maastricht , Netherlands .
