Evolut™ FX + aortic valve “ first ” in North Texas
The newest generation valve , the Evolut FX + transcatheter aortic valve replacement ( TAVR ) system , was placed by Dr . Stoler in May 2023 . He was the first in North Texas to bring this new valve post- FDA approval to aortic stenosis patients . As a principal investigator in the Dallas clinical trials , Dr . Stoler was involved in the evolution of these valves .
This newest iteration of Evolut offers larger coronary access windows from a modified diamond-shaped frame design which is four times larger than previous iterations of the Evolut TAVR system .
These examples of interventional cardiology “ firsts ” performed on the Dallas campus continue the history of innovation , leading the field of interventional cardiology and bringing the latest quaternary level treatment options to patients who often have complex valvular situations .
Specialized interventional procedures – Dallas campus
Angioplasty-related interventional procedures are mainstays for interventional cardiologists on the medical staff . Patients are often referred to the interventional cardiologists on the medical staff on the Dallas campus for advanced treatment using procedures that have been refined through years of research and innovation . With many clinical trials involving drug-eluting stents , high volume , high risk patients such as those with unprotected left main disease are treated at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital — Dallas .
Other specialized interventional services available to patients include :

• Advanced generation stent trials

• Atrial septal defect ( ASD ) and patent foramen ovale ( PFO ) closure

• Carotid stenting

• Coronary atherectomy and intravascular lithotripsy for heavily calcified disease

• High risk PCI with or without the use of cardiac assist devices

• Implantable pulmonary pressure monitoring device for heart failure

• Left atrial-to-femoral artery bypass system

• Percutaneous coronary intervention ( PCI ) of chronic total occlusions

• Peripheral angiography , angioplasty and atherectomy

• Transcatheter aortic valve replacement ( TAVR )

• Transcatheter edge to edge repair ( TEER ) of mitral valves using clip devices

Subhash Banerjee , MD , FACC , FSCAI , the Paul J . Thomas Endowed Chair in Cardiology and Chief of Cardiovascular Research and Innovation , was named Specialist of the Year by the internal medicine residents at Baylor University Medical Center . Each year , they anonymously vote for the clinicians that have had the most significant impact on their training in three areas : Internist of the Year , Intensivist of the Year and Specialist of the Year .
Structural heart disease program
Generally , structural heart disease programs focus on diseases involving the heart ’ s valves or other non-coronary structures of the heart . When it comes to this specialized area , Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital — Dallas brings additional specialties into the discussion to provide individualized , multidisciplinary care .
This team includes interventional cardiologists , heart failure specialists and cardiac surgeons as well as echocardiology specialists , advanced imaging experts and electrophysiologists on the medical staff . Expertise from board certified cardiovascular anesthesiologists is also vitally important . These specialized anesthesiologists work in concert with the team , differentiating the Dallas campus from other treatment centers .
The program offers catheter-based and less invasive procedures , resulting in improved outcomes for many patients . For example , the device used for transcatheter mitral valve repair has grown as a treatment option for patients with mitral regurgitation who are not candidates for surgical valve replacement . The program ’ s Center for Valve Disorders received patients from across Texas as well as the greater region in fiscal year 2024 for conditions needing advanced treatment options provided at Baylor Scott & White Heart and Vascular Hospital — Dallas . ( See dedicated section on the Advanced Cardiovascular Centers for more information .)
