A second half surge turned a slow start into another trip to the playoffs for the Pocahontas Redskins . After an 0-5 start , the Redskins reeled off four wins in a row , earned a playoff berth , but fell in a heartbreaker 29-28 to Dewitt . Now , in his second season as the head coach , Casey Chester believes his squad can battle for a conference championship in a slightly new look 4A-3 conference . The Pocahontas spread attack is led by All-State running back DJ Coffey . Coffey rushed for over 1600 yards a year ago behind an experienced , strong offensive line . Landen Gettings , Carter Couch , and Zane Baltz return to the core of that line and look to open up more holes for Coffey to hit and get to the endzone . Coach Chester tabs Coffey ’ s leadership and the offensive line as strengths for his Redskin team , and a big reason he is expecting big things this season . Coach Chester believes that although his wide receivers are inexperienced , they are very talented and could be a difference maker . At quarterback , the Skins will look to sophomore Spencer James , who was moved up last season as a freshman , and played well before a season ending injury . James is cleared to play and looks to take the bulk of the snaps , while Coffey will take some snaps at quarterback in some formations . On the defensive side of the ball , a pair of All-Conference linebackers lead the way . Ty Menard led the team with 140 tackles a year ago , while Rickey Regina followed suit with 110 tackles . Menard will pull double duty appearing as an H-back offense , while Gettings and Couch will be up front on the defensive line with Jon Warren at defensive end . Coffey will be in the defensive backfield along with returners Colton Brown and Brendyn Arnold . On special teams , Skyler Nunn-Kelley will handle kicking duties , while Regina will serve as the punter . Injuries during that slow start last season allowed several players to gain experience early in the season , which proved beneficial during Pocahontas ’ late season winning streak . Now , with several of those players returning , Coach Chester is looking for a better start and a run towards a conference title . It won ’ t be easy by any means , but look for the Pocahontas Redskins to be in the hunt at the top of the conference where they have traditionally been .
After a 1-9 finish last season , the Westside Warriors are working to improve and make their way back to the playoffs . Coach Bobby Engle has a roster with more experience and will be changing to the single wing offense . Senior Gavin Dodson will take the snaps at quarterback this year . Dodson was a running back a year ago and is tough , physical runner . Fellow senior Clay McClellon will be in the backfield after rushing for almost 500 yards as a junior . Classmate Hunter Drummonds will also be in the backfield and is a good blocker . Senior Weston Watlington started at half back , and will make the transition to sniffer back in the single wing . Senior Cole Keedy will return at receiver , while classmate Dakota Neely will line up at tight end . The offensive line will be key in this transition . Senior Jacob Moore will take over at center , while junior Beau Anderson returns at guard . Kam Allen will line up at strong guard , with Parker Simpson and Kai Cambron at the tackles . Defensively , the Warriors are paced by Gavin Boyle at nose guard . He is joined on the defensive line by Mike Orrick and Austin Statler . Sophomore Henry Yearta could play tackle or linebacker . Dodson and Neely will return to the outside linebackers ’ positions , with Watlington and McMellon inside . Graham and Keedy will be at cornerback , with seniors Bo Watson and Tyson Young completing the secondary at safety . Cason Stinson will handle the kicking duties for Westside this season . With eight returners on each side of the ball , look for the Westside Warriors to make big improvements in their new look offense .
