The Brookland Bearcats continue to grow the program and knock on the door of the playoffs . The Bearcats finished 5-5 a season ago , but finished with three straight wins . Coach Mark Hindsley hopes those wins and a second year in his system will continue the progress of the Bearcats program . Coach Hindsley knows what lies ahead in the 5A East , but he likes his team . “ Although there are a lot of young faces on the team , this has been a good summer , with a lot of kids stepping up and taking leadership roles ,” he said . The 5A East is an incredible league , and with the return of Greene County Tech and the addition of a program like Harding Academy , it doesn ' t get any easier . Every Friday will be a dogfight and we ' re excited to strap it up and go fight for a playoff spot .” Senior Hayden Elder returns at quarterback for the third year . Last season , Elder had 67 completions for 855 yards and six touchdowns . He also ran for 314 yards and three touchdowns . Junior Gabe Carter was one of Elder ’ s favorite targets . They connected for 26 completions and 491 yards and six touchdowns . The strength of the Bearcat power spread lies up front even though they will be young . Sam Walton , Riley Hicks , and Hudson Owens will start up front and look to pen up holes for Elder and fellow senior Calvin Spearman . Spearman will line up at running back after moving over from Greene County Tech . Junior Nathan Murray will also get some touches out of the backfield , as will junior Rickey Robinson , who could line up anywhere on the field . Carter and Robinson will be joined by junior Caden Chambers and senior Walker Spears at receiver to provide Elder more targets . Defensively , John Seats leads the way on the defensive line . The senior defensive end will be joined by Javan Payne ( 65 tackles ), Jacob Reece , Owens , and Carlton Key . Easton Cunningham will be at linebacker with Walton and Elijah Connors . In the secondary , senior Preston Koekemoer works at safety with Elder and Grey Watkins . Junior Dot Aloh could play safety as well , along with handling kicking duties . Spears will play corner with Garrett Mays on the other side . The 5A East didn ’ t get any easier , but look for the Brookland Bearcats to battle every Friday night and continue to show improvement as a program .
