Coach David Brown and the Wynne Yellowjackets are entering a new conference and looking for a fresh start after struggling a season ago . With three starters returning , the Jackets are looking to show some major improvement . Senior guard John Weatherford ( 6 ’ 2 ) returns after averaging 8.6 points and 4.5 rebounds last year . Weatherford is the team leader and a shooter with a high basketball IQ . Classmate Walker Hale ( 6 ’ 3 ) started several games at the forward position , runs the floor well , and has great length for rebounding and blocking shots . Junior guard Parker King ( 6 ’ 2 ) also got some starts as a sophomore and is a strong , physical scorer off the bounce . Senior Daxton Harris ( 6 ’ 3 ) will look to expand his role as a shooter and ball distributor . Cam Smith is another senior guard that is gritty and physical and looks to make an impact on the defensive end . 6 ’ 6 sophomore Tucker Douglas also hopes to add a presence on the defensive end with his rim protection and rebounding , while fellow sophomore Klark Garza ( 6 ’ 1 ) is a versatile player that can play multiple spots on the floor and add some depth . Coach Brown is excited about this year ’ s group and knows what it will take for his guys to be successful . “ We will need to stay healthy and grow up quickly ,” he said . “ Making shots , taking care of the ball , defending and rebounding at a high level , and continuing to build off of the foundation that has been laid are the keys to our season . This group has a willingness to work together , ability to overcome adversity , and the stability and structure of having a good off-season after having three head coaches in three years .” Look for the Wynne Yellowjackets to show much improvement and battle in the new 4A- 6 conference for a spot in the regional tournament .
The Wynne Lady Yellowjackets will have a host of new faces this season entering into a new conference . Coach Bobby Lewallen ’ s squad finished 15-18 last season , but return zero starters as they move over into the 4A-6 conference . Coach Lewallen feels this is a Lady Jacket team that can compete , though . “ Effort and energy are something we have to bring to every game ,” Coach Lewallen said . “ A weakness would be our lack of experience . After losing all five starters from last season , we are a completely different team with a different entry and commitment to our team .” Seniors Cadence Irby and Myah Mosgrove return some of the most experience and will be looked upon to bring leadership to such a young group . Both guards are outside threats that can get to the rim and finish . Juniors Julianne Weatherford and Angels Baskins are also looking to play a bigger role in the “ City with a Smile .” Weatherford has some experience off the bench as a forward , while Baskins can provide some depth for Wynne at a guard spot . Sophomores Japhia Light and Aaliyah Crawford will need to make an impact quickly at the high school level . Light can handle the ball at the point guard position , while Crawford will provide a post presence on both ends of the floor . The 4A-6 is a smaller conference with a lot of travel , but could provide the Wynne Lady Yellowjackets with the opportunity to compete for a regional berth . Look for the Lady Jackets to be in the mix come February .
