Government connects with residents
Lakeville ’ s history revolves around Lake Marion , Antlers Park , the railroad and its connections to the greater Minneapolis-St . Paul metropolitan area . The city has been one of the fastest growing communities in the state for many years . With a population of around 74,000 , Lakeville also has an active and growing business community , with over 1,500 businesses and several industrial and business parks .
The 38-square mile city has more than 125 miles of pedestrian and bike trails , over 1,700 acres of public parks and open space , 70 public facilities and seven beautiful lakes . An arts center , the Heritage Center for seniors and other groups and a wide variety of recreational opportunities add to the community spirit .
Lakeville ’ s history spans to 1858 , the same year Minnesota became a state . Established as a township and a village , the two finally incorporated to form the City of Lakeville in 1967 .
The City of Lakeville is managed by a mayor and a City Council . They meet at 6:30 p . m . the first and third Monday of each month at City Hall , 20195 Holyoke Ave . Council meetings are televised and available for online viewing . Lakeville City Council members are elected at-large to represent the entire community and are empowered by law to legislate citywide policy . This includes the authority to pass and enforce ordinances , establish public and administrative policies , create advisory boards and commissions , and manage the city ’ s financial operations , including preparing
a budget , auditing expenditures and transacting other city business as required by law .
The City Council appoints a City Administrator who directs city staff on implementation of council decisions and oversees day-to-day city operations . Residents are served by several departments : Administration , Community & Economic Development , Engineering , Finance , Fire , Liquor Operations , Parks & Recreation , Planning , Police and Public Works .

The website has a calendar with city programs , events and meetings , information for obtaining permits , ordinance data , the latest information on Parks & Recreation and Arts Center programs and much more .
Published regularly , the city provides information in the Friday editions of Sun Thisweek newspaper , as well as “ Focus on Lakeville ,” a weekly video update . The city , as well as various city departments , is also active on several social media networks , such as X ( formerly Twitter ), Facebook , Instagram , YouTube and Nextdoor .
