RESTORING HABITAT. INSPIRING STEWARDSHIP. PRESERVING CULTURE.
Originally launched in 2023 and expanded in 2024, the Conservancy’ s bold conservation and restoration initiative along Betsy Kerrison Parkway is shaping the future of three contiguous properties— formerly Rosebank Farms( 4368), 4346, and 4360 Betsy Kerrison Parkway. Spanning more than 87 acres of upland and marsh habitat, this project is designed to safeguard critical wildlife corridors, restore ecological balance, and create a welcoming space for public engagement.
FROM CLEANUP TO RENEWAL
The first phase of work is complete: the removal of dilapidated structures and hazardous trees has cleared the way for ecological renewal. With the groundwork laid, we now look ahead to revitalizing the land with native plant communities. Plans include the reintroduction of longleaf pines and other native trees, shrubs, and flowering species— restoring biodiversity, supporting pollinators, and enhancing habitat for migratory and resident wildlife.
RESTORATION WITH PURPOSE
This long-term effort isn’ t just about protecting land— it’ s about activating it for learning, connection, and culture. The site will feature interpretive nature trails, native gardens, and educational signage to promote environmental understanding and inspire stewardship. A key component will be the inclusion of a sweetgrass farm and traditional basket stands— an intentional cultural connection to honor and help preserve the Gullah Geechee artform and legacy. By integrating cultural preservation into land restoration, we recognize the interwoven stories of people and place.
ETHICAL WILDLIFE MANAGEMENT
As part of our commitment to ecosystem health, the Conservancy partnered with the Charleston Animal Society to humanely relocate a colony of feral cats from the site to the Bear Greer Memorial Cat Sanctuary in Ravenel, SC. Feral cats pose a significant threat to native species through predation and disease. This responsible relocation reflects our dual commitment to animal welfare and habitat protection.
In parallel, the restoration and conservation of these lands will reestablish safe, continuous wildlife corridors— critical for the movement, breeding, and survival of native and migratory species. By removing barriers and restoring native vegetation, we are helping to reconnect fragmented habitats and ensure the long-term ecological integrity of the Sea Islands.
A LIVING EXPRESSION OF OUR MISSION
The Betsy Kerrison Nature Area embodies the Conservancy’ s mission in action: preserving the natural character of the Sea Islands while fostering community responsibility, ecological resilience, and cultural continuity. As we move forward, this space will serve not only as a protected habitat— but as a model of conservation, education, and heritage preservation for generations to come.
