Board Leadership
The board chair is an appointed member of the board elected each year by vote of the full board of directors and may serve up to two consecutive one-year terms. The board chair position rotates jurisdictionally among appointed District of Columbia, state and federal members.
Board Composition and Tenure
The Board of Directors plays a pivotal role in steering the long-term success of the Airports Authority, representing the collective interests of airport stakeholders. The Airports Authority is governed by a 17-member board of directors. Seven members of the board are appointed by the governor of Virginia subject to confirmation by the Virginia General Assembly, four are appointed by the mayor of the District of Columbia subject to confirmation by the Council of the District of Columbia, three are appointed by the governor of Maryland, and three are appointed by the president of the United States with the advice and consent of the U. S. Senate. Directors are eligible to serve up to two consecutive six-year terms.
