BiKeep Smart Parking and Charging
In July 2024 Reagan National became the fi rst American airport to implement BiKeep, a smart parking system that provides a secure storage solution for personal bikes and scooters alongside charging capabilities for e-bikes and e-scooters.
The BiKeep program is offered free of charge to passengers and employees, with users afforded a 14-day window to store their bikes and scooters in designated Bikeep storage units. After that time, airport communications will be deployed through a convenient dashboard warning users that their personal bicycles, scooters and belongings will soon be relocated or removed. To access the program, users are required to download the user-friendly BiKeep mobile application.
Across Terminals 1 and 2 at Reagan National there are 30 self-locking bike racks and 20 self-locking scooter stations, all equipped with electric charging capabilities for bikes and scooters. Garage 2 hosts an additional 10 self-locking bike stalls equipped with charging amenities, while the south Metro plaza has fi ve bike stalls and fi ve scooter stations with similar charging facilities. Additionally, a bike repair stand for basic maintenance requirements is located in Garage 2.
In addition to encouraging the use of sustainable transportation alternatives and enhancing commuter options for employees, these personal EV stations remove electric bicycles and scooters from facility interiors, reducing the risk of fi re from the indoor charging of lithiumion batteries.
Employee Commuting Program
The Airports Authority offers monthly commuter benefi ts in lieu of parking subsidies for employees who arrive at work via mass transit, avoiding the GHG emissions from commuting to the offi ce with a personal vehicle. Moreover, the Airports Authority encourages the adoption of alternative transportation options by facilitating commuter rideshare pools and offering secure storage for personal bikes and scooters at Reagan National airport and Dulles commuter program partnership with Loudoun Economic Development.
Hybrid Vehicles
The Airports Authority is actively pursuing strategies to reduce fossil fuel consumption through its own operations, including replacing traditional fossil-fueled fl eet vehicles with greener alternatives through the purchase of hybrid electric vehicles utilized by Airports Operations, consolidated functions, and the Police Departments.
• Dulles International – 61 hybrid vehicles
• Reagan National – 40 hybrid vehicles
• Airports Authority headquarters – 8 hybrid vehicles
• Total – 109 hybrid vehicles
