As you head into the region from the west on Route 9 , also known as The Airline , you arrive in Wesley and Alexander . In early Autumn the drive offers spectacular views of the area ’ s blueberry barrens ablaze in red . Pocomoonshine Lake offers a public boat landing , paddling , swimming , fishing , ice fishing , snowshoeing , hunting , and snowmobiling .
The town of Meddybemps is well known for its excellent fishing , hiking , bird watching , boating , and hunting , with Meddybemps Lake bordering on Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge .
Heading north on Route 1 is the family-centered community of Baileyville , boasting four-seasons of recreation . It is here that paddlers can access the St . Croix International Waterway .
Downeast Lakes Land Trust helps maintain multi-use recreational trails throughout the region that are ideal for hiking in the Summer and Fall , and snowshoeing in Winter . They also host family-friendly education programs throughout the year .
