T he year was 1930 . It was the beginning of the Great Depression ; soup kitchens and breadlines were commonplace and one ’ s hopes and dreams were destroyed . America needed a hero and as luck or fate would have it , Robert Tyre “ Bobby ” Jones stepped up to the tee to answer that call .
The legendary Bobby Jones , a son of Atlanta , completed one of the greatest feats in sports - the “ Grand Slam ” in golf . He won all four major championships available to him in a single calendar year : The U . S . Open , The Open Championship , the U . S . Amateur , and the British Amateur . This incredible triumph remains unmatched in the sport today and is why Jones is considered the original GOAT . His name is mentioned in the same breath as modern-day legends Tiger Woods , Jack Nicolson , and Arnold Palmer .
