THROUGH MUSIC
New Community Choir Promotes Harmony and Understanding
With an impassioned belief that music has the power to provide meaningful connections , foster relationships and promote peace , the Weinstein JCC established Voices in Peace , an inclusive choir . The mission of Voices in Peace is to enrich and inspire the Richmond community through music .
This community choir initiative was made possible through the generous support of Making Music Happen , a grant from the Pertzik Fund for Arts and Culture at JCC Association of North America , and generous sponsorship provided by Dr . Nathan and Lisa Zasler .
With the expert guidance of esteemed choral directors Natan Berenshteyn and James B . Barrack , Voices in Peace blossomed into a diverse ensemble , comprising singers from varied backgrounds , faiths , and cultural identities . With over 60 passionate participants , this choir stands as a testament to the power of music as a tool to promote inclusivity by bringing people together , thereby transcending barriers and fostering understanding .
Throughout its journey , Voices in Peace not only introduced participants to the richness of Jewish choral music but also provided insights into the Jewish religion and fostered meaningful connections among its diverse members . Weekly rehearsals held at the Weinstein JCC , from mid-April to mid-October , culminated in two captivating community performances this fall , leaving audiences deeply moved and inspired .
The resounding success of these performances , drawing crowds of over 300 at the Weinstein JCC and 200 at Meadowbrook High School , underscored the choir ’ s ability to touch hearts and minds , particularly in times of adversity and division . Voices in Peace serves as a poignant reminder of the enduring values that bind us together as a community , transcending differences and fostering unity through the transformative power of music .
