People will say they grew apart . It doesn ’ t sound like much . You wonder how you didn ’ t see it coming . A tiny thread starts unravelling on your favourite maroon corduroy shirt . You pull it off . Fixed . Easy . Just as before . You continue wearing it , loving its texture on your skin . You love the compliments and attention you get when you wear it . There is a comfort in the thing itself ; knowing you chose it and it ’ s yours .
You notice the thread again . Pull it . You don ’ t know how to fix it . You ’ re too embarrassed to ask . You keep pulling , but this time it makes a hole . You try your best to sew it back up . It looks a bit shabby now , but you still love it , still wear it . The maroon dulls , the shirt feels flatter . There are fewer compliments , so fewer wears . You wonder about the character it once had , where it went . You wonder if it was your fault or …
Your favourite shirt is sandy corduroy . It blends seamlessly into your skin ; you look crisp and sleek . Sometimes , you think about your old shirt and miss the feeling of it , but you know if you tried it on again , you ’ d realise it was two sizes too big and it never really suited you in the first place .
