Ethan Allen and his enterprising younger brother Ira ( founder of the University of Vermont ) built one of the first homes in Sunderland , now the Ira Allen House ( a country inn ) right on Route 7A .
Sunderland and Arlington are popular launching sites for river adventures . Vermont River Runners rents canoes , kayaks , and tubes , and offers pickup service .
