DORSET
Dorset was chartered in 1761 .
In 1776 , the idea of Vermont as an independent republic was born in Cephas Kent ’ s tavern here .
The first commercial marble quarry in America opened in Dorset in 1785 . Dorset stone was used for the New York Public Library and for buildings in Washington , DC .
The Dorset Theater Festival offers first-rate productions June to September and has featured such prominent actors as Tim Daley , Judd Hirsch , Danny Devito and the late Treat Williams .
The Dorset Quarry is a popular swimming spot , now with organized paid parking .
EAST ARLINGTON
At East Arlington ’ s heart is a gristmill , built in 1764 by Remember Baker , who was first cousins with fellow Green Mountain Boys Ethan Allen and Seth Warner .
Old Mill Road Recording is home to a state-of-the-art recording studio with an in-house Grammy ® -winning engineer , as well as art studios .
Old Mill Road Media ’ s magazine offices are also here and turn out Stratton Magazine , Vermont Magazine , Berkshire Magazine , Manchester Life , the Vermont News Guide and more .
East Arlington ’ s Kelly Stand Road ( closed in winter ) is the gateway to the Green Mountain National Forest .
Head north toward Sunderland and Manchester through the Chiselville covered bridge . You may recognize it from a scene in “ Baby Boom .”
