Australian Water Association Sustainable Water Prize
Awarded to a Primary and Secondary project that best deals with the issues of water conservation and management
Primary : Calinda Diacopoulos , Amy Vu , Hannah Kelly , Mona Vale Public School , A Pollution Solution
Calinda , Amy and Hannah investigated the correlation between facilities and the amount of rubbish on beaches . They surveyed 19 beaches and determined more rubbish was found on beaches with the most facilities . Based on the rubbish they found , they concluded that many small decisions we make every day can affect the environment .
Secondary : Jasmine Saha , PLC Sydney , Waste to Resource : Biomass and Biochar Chelation for Sustainable Water Treatment
Jasmine created biochars from waste materials such as orange peels , banana peels and coffee grounds to use as green chelators for the treatment of water contaminated with copper . Her results showed that biochars using orange peel and banana peel produced using domestic ovens have the potential to be used in remediation systems - making this research particularly relevant to application in developing ( and resource-poor ) countries .
