Jasmine Saha , PLC Sydney , Waste to Resource : Biomass and Biochar Chelation for Sustainable Water Treatment
Jasmine created and tested green chelators as a remedy for copper contamination in water using orange peels , banana peels and coffee grounds as biomass and biochars . She found that orange peel and banana peel biochars were successful at chelating copper at a range of concentrations .
Elyse Tan , PLC Sydney , Thumbs up for Gums- The Dye Deal Alternative
Elyse created natural gum adsorbents using aloe vera , flaxseed , okra , chitosan and guar . She used absorbency values in a colorimeter to determine that aloe vera and chitosan gums were able to achieve the highest reduction in dye concentration in water . The results suggest that these gums could have value in treating water pollution from the textile industry .
Jio Yim , PLC Sydney , De Ice Baby- A novel de-icing agent and toxicity to Daphnia magna
Jio tested the effectiveness of a novel sugarcane molasses-pickle brine mixture as a de-icing agent compared to conventional calcium chloride . Her investigation showed that her mixture reduced the formation of ice and also had lower toxicity to Daphnia magna when tested in the laboratory .
