2023 STANSW Young Scientist Awards Presentation Ceremony
Kaitlyn Liucao , PLC Sydney , Sweet Sugar , Sweet Danger
Kaitlyn enjoys cooking and eating muffins but sometimes the muffin is a bit too sweet . She investigated if it possible to decrease the amount of sugar in the recipe to make it a healthier option but still retain its enjoyable taste . She reduced the amount of sugar in each batch by 10 % of the original amount . Kaitlyn found that reducing the original amount of sugar by 20 % still provided a tasty muffin that her family could enjoy .
Romilly Merani , PLC Sydney , Once Upon a Water Pipe
Blocked water pipes are an issue many people face and Romilly was interested in finding out how fast different liquids can break down common blockages , such as fats ( butter ), hair , toilet paper and flushable wipes . She concluded only strong commercial drain cleaners were able to break down most things including flushable wipes , but suggests that flushable wipes shouldn ’ t be called ‘ flushable ’ as they didn ’ t break down in water or milder products .
Dylan Sun , Redeemer Baptist School , Slip and Slide _ Why It Is Unsafe When Shoes Are Too Old
Dylan examined the effect of wear and tear on shoe soles to determine if they are safe to wear on various surfaces . He found that shoes with worn-out soles have reduced friction on all surfaces . With his results , Dylan created a safety chart to highlight the risks of worn-out shoes on each surface .
